Biography

Surita Meldau obtained both her B.Sc(med)hons in Human Genetics and her M.Sc in Medicine from the University of Cape Town after which she took up a post at the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) as a medical Scientist in the Chemical Pathology Inherited Metabolic Diseases (IMD) molecular laboratory. Over the past 11 years she developed a passion for metabolic disease and especially mitochondrial disease. Currently she holds a joint academic appointment with the University of Cape Town and the NHLS. As principle medical scientist in the division of Chemical Pathology and head of the NHLS IMD molecular laboratory she is constantly working at improving the molecular diagnostic scope for metabolic disease in South Africa, while serving as part of the larger NHLS/UCT metabolic disease group and the national network for mitochondrial disorders.
