ICORD has a good tradition of organising annual meetings. The conference in South Africa will be the eleventh since the first ICORD took place in Stockholm in 2005. In addition to Stockholm, meetings have been developed in Madrid, Brussels, Washington DC, Rome, Argentina, Tokyo, St Petersburg, Ede (The Netherlands) and Mexico City.

Rare Diseases International (RDI) is a EURORDIS-led initiative that brings together national and regional patient organizations from around the world to create the global alliance of rare disease patients and families. RDI was launched in May 2015 and its mission is to represent one strong united voice on behalf of the people living with a rare disease around the globe. RDI has partnered with ICORD in order to support the exisiting annual ICORD conference. The annual meeting in South Africa will be the first major event to showcase this joint initiative between ICORD and RDI.

ICORD is looking forward to the collaboration with Rare Diseases South Africa (RDSA) in the organisation of the event, which would be the first ICORD annual meeting on the African continent.
